Learning Objectives

  • Define the clinical rationale for early intervention: Understand the shift from a medication-first approach to early interventional strategies, including Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) and Micro-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), to reduce treatment burden and improve patient outcomes.
  • Identify suitable candidates for interventional procedures: Develop criteria for selecting appropriate patients for interventional therapies based on disease progression, ocular surface health, medication adherence, and quality of life considerations.
  • Implement collaborative post-operative care and monitoring: Recognise the optometrist's role in the long-term management of patients following interventional procedures, including the identification of potential complications and the assessment of surgical efficacy.
  • To provide an understanding of critical ocular emergencies of ‘red eye’ presentations followed by the more common causes of ‘red eye’ in a systematic anatomical approach.
  • To provide a comprehensive overview of anterior uveitis: history and clinical findings to aid in diagnosis of aetiology, differentials (infectious, non-infectious, masquerades and tips and tricks for not missing ‘ocular emergencies’) and its management.
  • Clinical scenarios of ‘anterior uveitis’ aimed at being an interactive session on initial management and beyond (local and systemic therapy options)
  • To revise the major infectious aetiologies of conjunctivitis and keratitis including bacterial, viral, and fungal causes and recognise how patient risk factors and clinical context guide diagnosis and initial management in optometric practice.
  • To identify red-flag symptoms and clinical signs in patients which should prompt urgent or immediate referral to ophthalmology to prevent vision-threatening complications.
  • To consider the principles of long-term comanagement following ocular surface infection, including monitoring for and managing visual sequelae such as corneal scarring, irregular astigmatism, dry eye disease, and reduced visual quality.
