Learning Objectives
- Develop a better understanding of the signs and symptoms of cataracts, and the diagnostic modalities available to assist with their management.
- Confidently undertake pre-referral assessment of cataract patients to allow optimised surgical evaluations. This may include use of mydriatic drops for fundus assessment, topical anaesthetic for IOP measurement or gonioscopy, and fluorescein for ocular surface evaluation.
- Develop confidence to initiate prescription of therapeutic agents for the interim period while awaiting surgical opinion for cataracts which may include (where appropriate) preservative free lubricants, IOP lowering agents, anti-allergy agents.
- Develop an appreciation of the difficulties involved in surgical management of routine and atypical cataract patients and the rationale for one IOL choice over another
- Garner a better appreciation of post operative therapeutic eye drop regimens are used, so that if patients are encountered in the post operative period they can better evaluate or understand their drop usage.
- Further understanding of options and limitations for refractive and visual improvement after cataract surgery when a patient is dissatisfied.
- Gain confidence in identifying post operative complications from cataract surgery which may be first presenting to an optometrist and appropriate management pathways. Aside from referral for ophthalmological assessment and management, this may include topical IOP lowering or oral prescribing of acetazolamide (when oral agents become available for optometrists to prescribe), topical anti-inflammatory agents, lubricants, and anti-microbial agents.
